About Philip Havens
Philip Havens is the founder and principal consultant of Philip Havens Technology LLC. His interest in computers was first sparked during the 1970’s before personal computers, iPhones, Facebook, wireless networks, and the Internet that we know today. His first computer programming experience was picked up from working on a mainframe computer with punch cards. That initial excitement and interest in computers prompted his pursuit of a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Quinnipiac College in Hamden, Connecticut, graduating with honors and as a member of Delta Mu Delta International Honor Society in Business.
Upon graduation from QC, Philip’s professional career started at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, a division of United Technologies Corporation. He began as a computer programmer and then advanced to systems analyst, working on computer applications in UTC Corporate and PWA Payroll, Human Resources, Financial Systems, and hourly time-collection systems. It was in the early 1980’s while at PWA that Philip had his first opportunity to set up and learn to use an IBM Personal Computer and to buy his first Apple computer.
The opportunity to work with PC’s really motivated him to learn as much as he could about the potential of these new systems, so much so that it became Philip’s desire to work with personal computers on a full-time basis. He left PWA to start his first computer consulting company named RAM Computer Services based in Meriden, Connecticut. RAM Computer Services provided computer programming services to clients that were pioneers in using PCs.
ESPN, Inc. was one of those pioneering companies and they became a client of Philip’s in 1984. He was contracted to develop a golf leaderboard scoring system that ran on a Compaq “portable” computer. This near “real-time” scoring system was first used at a Senior PGA tour event that ESPN was covering in Newport, Rhode Island. The overwhelming success of the scoring system led to other consulting assignments at ESPN and eventually resulted in full-time employment from 1984 until the fall of 2009.
Philip’s 25-year career with ESPN, Inc. enabled him to broaden his technology expertise well beyond being just a personal computer expert. Philip has demonstrated repeatedly that he is highly motivated to become an expert in any area that he gets involved in. His areas of expertise and know-how cover technologies including office automation systems, document management systems, telephony and voicemail systems, workflow management and imaging systems, computer help desk management, web-based applications, website development, project management, enterprise project portfolio management, and resource management systems.
With all of his computer and technology expertise, some people might think that Philip would be a “techno geek”. However, he also has other interests and has been involved in local volunteer work. Philip loves podcasting (for three years he hosted an interview format podcast on iTunes called Bowhunting Freedom), archery, bow hunting, photography, hiking, fishing, kayaking, snow shoeing (in the winter of course) and many other activities in the great outdoors. He previously served on the New Hartford Board of Education, the NHBOE’s Technology Committee and he was the webmaster for Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Connecticut for a while. Philip served as the Vice President of the New Hartford Business Council from July 1, 2010 – June 2011. Philip was an early member of Valley Community Baptist Church’s website committee and since 2016 has served on their staff as their Information Technology Director. Philip and his wife Audrey, married 37 years, live in New Hartford, Connecticut and actively serve in their church located in Barkhamsted.
